It is a critical requirement of the Framework that proposed development should follow sustainable development principles, incorporating improved public transport as a central element of this theme.
A series of opportunities exist to enhance the transportation offer, including the following:
The introduction of ‘Super Routes’, creating a series of bus-only lanes that are proposed to connect the Town Centre with the broader catchment area.
The opening of a new, dedicated bus and cycle access route beneath the Gateshead Highway along an extension of Sunderland Road, giving access to the southern part of the high street
A general improvement in bus frequency and timing throughout the borough
Closure of the High Level Bridge to private vehicle traffic and its retention as a bus and cycle connection to central Newcastle
Implementation of the Quayside Transit proposal, with connections ‘Inland’ to the Business Quarter
Implement the Gateshead Funicular as a supplementary, theatrical connection between the Town Centre and the Gorge
Enhance pedestrian access to the Transport hub
Consider the benefits of a heavy rail station adjacent to the Business Quarter.
