Vegatation

The main blocks of vegetation relate to the steep gorge embankments. Vegetation planted as a buffer to earlier infrastructure highway works is maturing but in this instance creates a negative suburban character that is not in keeping with the aspiration for a more urbane environment.

Topography

One of the most distinguishing features of Gateshead is the topography. From the Quayside the land rises some 70 metres to the southern end of the Town Centre.

This dramatic change in level has influenced the form and character of Gateshead and is still a major obstacle to safe easy pedestrian connections form the town to the Quayside. The landform can be catagorised into typically four zones, the steep slopes of the river gorge, the intermediate plateaus created for the railway industry, the upper slopes of Town Park and finally the higher plateau to the south of the study area in the area of the Civic Centre.
