The first views on entering central Gateshead vary depending on approach. From the east, along the Sunderland Road the view is dominated by the multi storey car park, flyover and the elevations of the Chandless Estate flats.

Along Askew Road travelling west the aspect differs from one side of the road to the other. Diagonally to the northeast, as the land drops away there are views to the Tyne Bridges and Newcastle, whilst to the east the combined elevations of the Barns Close Estate present a wall of built form, screening out views beyond.

The views entering Gateshead over the Tyne Bridge are layered by the railway viaduct and the old Town Hall beyond.

Due to its elevated position above the Gorge, much of the central area and in particular Town Park, commands memorable panoramic views up and down the river and across to Newcastle.

As the land drops away to the north and east from the Town Centre, there are framed views out to Newcastle and the bridges.
