Major transport and comprehensive
redevelopment schemes of the 1960's and '70s have
resulted in very little references to the historic
core was
destroyed and replaced with large scale buildings
at low density along widened streets. Consequently
most of the central area is post war.
Some historic form remains
from Victorian Gateshead, in particular the Bottle
Bank area that includes the railway viaducts, the
old Town Hall collection of buildings, regent and
Walker Terraces, parts of High Street South and
the start of the traditional Victorian terraced
hosing to the south of the study area.
